The relevance of numerical methods in structural evaluation and SHM

Material evaluation requires in-depth understanding of physical phenomena observed and utilized for nondestructive testing. This understanding is often limited to theoretical predictions and experiments conducted on rather simple geometry structures. Numerical methods on the other hand, provide an opportunity to scrutinize complex structures and inexplicable phenomena.

The lecture will discuss the importance of numerical simulations for Nondestructive Testing and Structural Health Monitoring. In particular utilization of the Local Interaction Simulation Approach (LISA) for theoretical and experimental investigations of ultrasonic guided waves and laser ultrasounds will be addressed.
