Remarks on additive manufacturing constraints in topology optimization

In this talk, three different ways of imposing the additive manufacturing constraints are presented in Autodesk Nastran such that the topology-optimized design is ready to be fabricated using layer-by-layer printing methods. The three methods differ in how to handle the non-differentiable maximum and minimum operators that are used to guarantee the topological density of the upper-layer elements are not greater than that of the lower layer elements. The pros and cons of the three algorithms are discussed as well as how the users can control parameters to produce a design that is prone to have overhang structures or a design that does not produce overhang structures.
